What would be the meaning behind commissioning statues of evangelists for the florence cathedral in the 1400s?

as in what would be the message they would want to convey from them? the power of florence? ermmm.. showing thier hard won republican rights from outside threats? hmmmm i wonder. oh yes i do. i thought they were commisioned. so the rich people payed the artist to make it for them. thanks though.
