- The Dome (or Duomo, as it's called in Florence) was the largest dome in Italy at the time. Like most of Florence's grand architecture, it was commissioned by the Medici family, specifically Cosimo de Medici. The Dome was designed by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi. It quickly became the symbol of the city and a source of pride for all Florence residents. Attached to the cathedral was a baptistery where Florence's most notable residents, including Dante Allegheny and Niccolò Machiavelli, were baptized.
